My name is Carl Phelan. I was born on February 16, 1930 on a small farm in Smyer, Texas where I lived until 1939. I moved to Levelland, Texas and went to school there until 1948. After high school I worked in construction and in the oil fields until the spring of 1954. At Sul Ross State College I graduated with a B.S. In Biology in 1959. I got married to Jacqueline Qualls on April 12, 1959.

The National Science Foundation gave me a grant to attend Colorado College in the summers of 1965 to 1967 in Colorado Springs where I got a master’s degree in earth science in 1967. I also attended South Plains Junior college in Levelland, Texas. Later on I also took some Geology courses at The University of Texas at Austin, as well as computer courses at Texas State University in San Marcos.

I began teaching in Van Horn, Texas in September of 1959. I got other teaching jobs in Coahoma, Levelland, Austin, Thrall, Cotulla and Dilley- all in Texas. I retired from public school teaching in 1989.

I then took a job teaching Math at Gary Job Corps in San Marcos, Texas and retired from there in 1999. My next full time work was a security guard & dispatcher for The City of Austin Department of Energy. I retired from there on May 31st, 2012. That was my third retirement!
